A Tale of Surfing Seals and Phobic Surfers

November 25, 2015

Okay, so I've just had an article published in Inside Morpeth about me and my business.  It's printed below just for a bit of fun!!

There’s a good chance you’ve seen Morpeth businessman Andrew Flounders already. Not in a suit and tie, rather on a surfboard with a Seal. He and his friend Matty caught some remarkable footage last year that went viral across the globe – you can check it out here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dHeM6gGv8k ). It was so big that even Lady Gaga tweeted a picture of him and the seal! But what you may not know about Andrew is that his other passion is helping people, and he does it rather well.

Andrew is the owner of a successful therapy business in Morpeth, the Mindworx. The Mindworx offers bespoke therapies using a combination of Hypnosis, Time Line Therapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP). And he is gathering a reputation for delivering powerful and often rapid change. That’s where the phobic surfer comes in….

One of Andrew’s most recent successes involves a surfer who was afraid of the sea.  The surfer, Darryn Wade from Amble, explains: “After a surfing accident many years ago, I have suffered paralysing fear and panic whenever I approach the sea or even thought about it, especially if I’m alone. This isn’t good for a surfer! To be honest I’ve pretty much stayed out of the water since”. He goes on to explain that after a chance encounter with Andrew “I had one session with him at the Mindworx and within three days had had two surfing sessions completely anxiety free, and one of them completely alone.  It’s so liberating to now be fear free and able to enjoy my favourite pastime again - it has been literally life changing.”

And for Andrew this is why he loves doing what he does: “I love the look of surprise and quizzical disbelief when I’ve completed the therapy. I ‘test out’ a future scenario when the client would normally experience a phobic response and now it’s gone completely. There is disbelief because their phobia had become part of their identity - they couldn’t remember a time when they didn’t ‘do it’. It had become so much part of them that they’d often adapted their lives to avoid, accommodate or manage their fear, yet now it’s gone. Now they can do things that they haven’t been able to do before; Fly, touch things, be near things, go outside in a storm, things that most other people take for granted”. As Darryn stated “it’s liberating”.

Whilst Andrew specialises in anxiety, phobias, stress and PTSD he also has success with a wide range of other issues including Smoking Cessation, Weight Loss, Motivation and Coaching.  You can find out more about what he does on his web page or FB page.  Change is at your fingertips.
